Company Background

Bighorn Botanicals was founded in 1991 by Rus Willis, beginning with a contract to harvest and process Pacific Yew bark (Taxus brevifolia) for a pharmaceutical company developing a chemotherapeutic drug from a natural
anti-cancer constituent found in the Yew.

On completion of that contract in 1993, and revitalized consumer interest in the use of herbal supplements, the company began developing specially selected botanicals which have been historically documented as significantly beneficial to Native Americans and pioneers in the Pacific Northwest.

Over the years, we have researched and developed products for alternative health care professionals from medicinal herbs native to northwestern Montana based on ethnobotany (historical use), scientific research and sustainability of the resource.

As a bulk raw material supplier for the past 16 years to the herbal, nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries, we have supplied over 500,000 pounds of various dried and milled botanicals that are native, naturalized and cultivated in Montana.  Our clients have included companies in the United States, Mexico, Asia and Europe.

Capability

Our 10,000 square foot bulk processing and storage facility operates with custom designed milling and drying equipment. We are the only company in Montana with the knowledge and capability to mill and dry tonnage of herbs and morel mushrooms.  We have in-house powdering and tea bagging capabilities, manufacture bulk tinctures (including final bottling for the retail level), soap and lotion.

Our extensive network of landowner connections encompasses over 14,000 square miles in Montana and northern Idaho including Federal, State and private lands.  Microbiological assays conducted by an independent laboratory in Montana can be provided upon request.  None of our products are irradiated or sterilized with toxic gases.
